New Job

The day started with an interview for a job. I mostly listened.

The interviewer happened to graduate from the same college as me. So did her husband and daughter.

“This is how Ivy Leagues must feel when they meet, except I’m trying to get a part time job slightly above minimum wage and those Ivy Leagues are probably discussing million dollar CEO positions or something,”

I thought. 

I think I am going to like my position. The hours are regular and around the same pay as my bakery job. I won’t be able to substitute nearly as much, but maybe that’s okay. 

I got The Farside newsletter finished and sent to the printers. I am pretty proud of it. It’s influenced by old xeroxed punk zines, with a combination of corny and professional. 

There were two free shows tonight: one at the Farside and the other at the Engine Room. Both were great. 

I got to see Cool Tricks, the “Ramones-core” Ramones rip-off band.

Finally saw Adam Reid. He is one smooth singing hobbit. 

Quiet Clouds is probably one of my favorite bands currently playing in Tallahassee. Usually songs without vocals would lose my interest, but the music moves like a good classical piece. Great use of quiet/loud and just hanging on a riff. 

Samsquanch is like This Old Machine, but fleshed out and picked up. Stefan has a great Paul Beribeau-like voice. 

I left during Send Away Stranger to go check out the Engine Room free show.

Pat Puckett sounded eerily familiar. He has the classic baritone country/twang voice and sings kind of downer songs. 

Young Adult was absolutely the highlight of the night. The mashup band from Curious Animals and Woodthrush layers vocals and acoustic rumbling into beautiful and sad symphonies.

I actually like Driscol’s songs better stripped down with just acoustic guitar and Dunn as a fragile, tender backup vocalist, but the full band has a sort of orchestra feel that is nice too. They tend to hang onto mantras a little long, though. 

The repeated moments where I got chills more than made up for the over-repeated mantras. 

Waiting for my girlfriend to come back from Tampa. Forced to talk to a lot of people tonight. Paranoid everyone hates me.
