Past Week’s Shows

I work a lot but have weekends off now. It’s strange having a solid block of days to consistently look forward to. Before I got weekends off, every day may as well have been named the same.

Last night (Monday) was a great show with Austin Lucas, Cory Driscol, Woodthrush and S.I. at my house.

Last time I saw Austin was at Harvest of Hope 2. He is what the majority of country music should be right now: slightly corny, but sincere and without the pandering, corporate BS tugging at it.

I finally introduced myself to Cory Driscol after seeing him around. He plays very depressing music. It’s lovely stuff.

Woodthrush reminded me of a folkier, harpier paralell universe later Radiohead. In fact, Caitlin Dunn is like Thom Yorke in that she could be singing anything and I would be hooked.

S.I. was special. They like their drunk sailor-sounding songs. The accordian helps that sound. One of them wore a cape.

Saturday was a great show at St. Anger House with Jones St. Boys, Mystery Date and USA-Holes.

My band played with Jones St. Boys in Tampa on our last tour. I know reviewers love to  describe a band’s sound with the blender analogy, but goddamn do they sound like Matt and Kim, and Japanther in a blender. It’s infectious fun with cool drum beats.

I missed Mystery Date. But I was told they covered Heart of Glass. I am glad they play so much, but am slightly jealous that my drummer is off having so much fun while my band has yet to play a show in like a month. We are recording soon, so I won’t be a curmudgeon.

Speaking of playing out a lot: USA-Holes. They are on just about every show ever. They are quite the hit in Tallahassee. I find them to be jazzy, slightly mathy (like long division vs calculus mathy) with happy hipster dance vibes. They improvise a lot. And not only are their chords jazzy, but I don’t think they ever play a song the same way twice.

My band played with USA-Holes and Wet Nurse at

on Thursday

We were treated like rock stars with veggie plates, pizza, etc. etc. They made our friends get backstage passes to visit us in the back room. It was funny. The sound was crystal clear there.

Friday (now I am out of order) was a visit to my friend’s dance night at Water Works. I danced to 1 1/2 songs. The full song I danced to was a La Roux song. She is an androgynous woman after my heart.

The Friday before that was Reunion-palooza with Stillmen, Ka Plaa, No Humanity and Mystery Date at Ghazi House. I am so glad that Stillmen might, maybe, perhaps be back together again. Ka Plaa had a lot of energy. Their polo wearing fans had even more. No Humanity and Mystery Date both did insanely good.

That’s as far back as my memory goes.
